Informer

Oh dear God, I have
“Informer” stuck in my head.
This is bad.

SONG OF THE DAY:
“Informer”
Snow
1993

INSIGHT:
Who cares?! Just get it out!

$300

This song is an insidious little earworm. Although a catchy tune, the repeating lyrics will have you begging for mercy after a couple hours with this gem stuck in your head.
.
TODAY'S SONG:
"$300"
Soul Coughing
1998
.
INSIGHT:
I suspect this song is in my head for the following reasons:

  • It was featured on the TV show "House" several weeks back
  • I could really used an extra $300
  • Also, "iiiiiiiiiiiiiii neeeeeeeeeeeed for you to be reasonable . . . "

The last reason being greatest factor. This song hit me in the shower this morning while I was thinking about plea negotiations with an individual who has decidedly unrealistic expectations.

Mawell's Silver Hammer

I was not alert enough this morning to make note of what song was stuck in my head. I can tell you, however, what song I have been humming to myself all afternoon long.

TODAY'S SONG:
"Maxwell's Silver Hammer"
The Beatles
1969
.
INSIGHT:
This one's easy. I have been playing the Abbey Road CD in my car the last few days.
.
Today I finally got around to looking up "petaphysical sciences." I'll be frank with you, I am still not really clear on what that is. Perhaps her interest in this ambiguous field of study justifiably gave Maxwell Edison motive to dispatch poor Joan.

Missed the Boat

Finally, a decent song this morning! Not the whole song, mind you, only a select snippet was playing repeatedly in my head today.
.
TODAY'S SONG:
"Missed the Boat"
Modest Mouse
2007
.
INSIGHT:
It has been a while since I have listened to this album, so I am not really sure why I was hearing this song today.
.
What I keep coming back to is the especially wonderful part of the song "all our favorites were a'playing so we could shake shake shake shake shake." Even though it was only playing in my head, I still can't help dance along!

Poison

.

It's diving me out of my mind . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
this song's becoming quite a grid
Can't get it out of my head
Not thinking great thoughts, but this song instead

.

TODAY'S SONG:
"Poison"
Bel Biv DeVoe
1990
.
INSIGHT:
None.
You just wake up one morning and this little nugget of new jack swing is sounding over and over in your head reminding you to "never trust a big but and smile." Sage advice.

Drawing

More children's music when I woke up today. This one comes from the mostly wonderful Barenaked Ladies "Snack Time" album.
.
Sadly the song I heard was not one of the finer tracks from Snack Time.
.
TODAY'S SONG:
"Drawing"
Barenaked Ladies
2008
.
INSIGHT:
Again, this is another CD that Max and I listen to during our daily commute.
.
There are some fantastic kids' songs on this album, but "Drawing" is not one of them. Inexplicably I keep hearing the phrase "with my pencil crayon . . . with my pencil crayon . . . with my pencil crayon . . . with my pencil crayon . . . " Also the repetitive na-na-na's up the annoyance factor.

Emphatical Piratical

This morning I was humming tunes from the Emphatical Piratical album, specifically the title track, which is set to the tune of Offenbach's "Galop Infernal."
.
This song may rattle around in my head in heavy rotation for quite some time. It's quite catchy.
.
TODAY'S SONG:
"Emphatical Piratical"
Captain Bogg & Salty
2008
.
INSIGHT:
No mystery why this song is stuck in my head. My nearly-two-year-old son Max and I have been listening to this CD during our daily commute. My husband Matt has also been humming various Captain Bogg & Salty ditties lately.
.
How could you possibly avoid singing these lyrics over and over and over and over and . . . ?
.

I used to fancy myself as a bit of a hipster on the musical scene. Now in my 30's, this is the kind of stuff to which you will find me jamming out.

You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me, Lucille

Rare is the morning I do not wake up with a song in my head. I have no control over it, or I would choose a much cooler playlist.
.
I have long wondered if there is any pattern to the songs I wake up singing. This blog will be my effort to keep track of the crappy songs upon which I involuntarily ruminate.
.
.
TODAY'S SONG:
"You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me, Lucille"
Kenny Rogers
1977
.
INSIGHT:
None.
.
Absolutely no idea why this song is in my head. I have no recollection of hearing it recently. I do not know anyone named Lucille. I have not recently been abandoned with four hungry children and crops in the field.
